Children's Day at the Museum

Great news! Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery will be celebrating the 2016 Children's Day at the Museum for the month of October and November. The theme of the celebration is "Wallet Wonders" as it is in conjunction with our ongoing exhibition "Works on Papers: Art Inside the Wallet". There are many activities lined up for the children to enhance financial literacy and to learn about the history of money through fun and play, in the form of puzzle races, workshops, talks, hands-on activities and much more.

Candle-lier Workshop – Free Workshop

Make your used tin cans useful again! It’s time to stop disposing used tin cans. Let’s try to recycle and reuse them. You can upcycle used tin cans into beautiful decorative tea candle holders by making holes on the tin cans using nails and hammer. Draw a design onto the tin can before you punch holes according to your preferred pattern or you can punch freehand directly onto the tin can. Add a string and hang it up in a place where you’d like to enjoy the ambiance of candle light by night. The tiny holes create gorgeous scattered light patterns on surrounding areas when a candle is lit up inside. The tin can tea candle is a great source of light and a safe way to burn a tea candle.

The Evolution of Malaysian Numismatics History – Free Talk

Have you ever wondered about the origin of money in our country? If so, take the opportunity to listen to a talk by one of Malaysia’s notable numismatists on the subject that spans a few hundred years. Learn about the early tin ingots found in various sizes and shapes of blocks, cones and animals followed by insights on the history-rich Malay Sultanate coins before moving on to colonial money from the Portuguese, Dutch and the English. Take a look at private banknotes of renowned banks of pre-World War II era and beyond, as well as a closer look at the four series of banknotes produced by Bank Negara Malaysia from then till now. Through this talk, you will have the opportunity to understand the subject of numismatics and explore the fascinating history of the development in the region. The talk will be conducted in Bahasa Melayu.

Learn how to make paper beads and transform them into beautiful wearable jewellery. With some wire and paper you will be able to create stylish and attractive bespoke fashionable items.

Come and join our Art Gallery Curator for a free behind-the-scenes guided tour and hear untold stories about Chang Fee Ming in the preparation of this exhibition 'Terengganu: Selaut Kasih, Sepantai Sayang'.

Multipurpose Hooks Workshop

The Multipurpose Hooks Rack is to allow participants to learn basic woodworking skills and develop awareness on up-cycling and recycling. The wood used are up-cycled as they are off cut wood but can be reused. The utensils are actually rejected items (by the manufacturer) or discarded (given by people who recycle). First, the participants are given the chance to stain/ paint their wood. After that, they will need to bend the utensils and then nail it into the wood. Lastly, participants get to decorate their new hook rack with markers based on individual creativity.

DIY Mini Garden (Terrarium)

Add a little green to your indoor space with an eye-catching terrarium! Terrariums are not only easy to make, they are great oxygen boosters. If you have an old jar, a plastic container, a fishbowl or any kitchen canister at home, you can create a mini-world full of lush and beautiful plants of your own. In this activity, participants will learn to "up-cycle" old, unwanted items into a miniature indoor garden. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own favourite jars to "up-cycle".

Preservation and Collection of Works on Paper

How long would your works on paper last? How can you tell if your work of art is "not well"? Come and listen to three experts sharing their knowledge on identifying different types of materials (paper, ink, paint, etc.) and the proper method of handling, storing and conserving works on paper. The three panellists are Associate Professor Dr. Mandana Berkeshi (International Islamic University of Malaysia), Encik Mohd Nasser bin Malin (National Archives of Malaysia) and Ms Lisa Stoddart (experienced watercolour Art Conservator). This forum will be moderated by YM Tunku Mariati Tunku Mukhtar.

Fun with Cartooning

Drawing, like reading, writing and maths is a skill that can be learned and polished. All you need are just some basic guidelines and a character. In the first half of this session, we will cover some key fundamentals (features, poses, gestures, facial expressions) using the most simple character - a stickman! Then you can create your own story by using these techniques to guide your stickman through various adventures!

Looking After Your Artwork (Basic)

Participants will learn the basic knowledge to minimize and avoid future deterioration and damage to works of art. This workshop will introduce the contributing factors that destroy the works of art. there will be a short hands-on session on basic framing at the end of the workshop.

Sock Puppet Making Workshop

Sock puppets are easy and cheap to make. The workshop is to teach simple methods of adding different features to the sock and an endless array of puppets can be made. Fancy buttons and colourful clothes are among the items, the children are going to have fun with! Get an opportunity to learn how to animate your sock puppet and run your own show.

Explore the Urban Forest with BNM Museum and Art Gallery (MAG)

This is a one-day getaway programme with MAG. Participants will go on a nature exploration trip in the morning to discover the collection of tropical plants, the different characteristics and usages as well as their importance to the natural world. In the afternoon, participants will return to MAG for a short guided tour of ‘From Sea To Submit’ (FSTS) exhibition and then to create their own artwork based on their inspiration from the exploration as well as the exhibition.

A Walkthrough with Ajis Mohamad

Ajis Mohamad is the most well-known artist in Malaysia for his underwater scenery paintings. With his self-taught talent and experience, he clearly captures the underwater world. He will be sharing with us how he started his career and his journey to become the artist he is today.

Special Talk

Accessible Economics: The Rise of House Prices

This talk highlights the recent developments in the Malaysian property market and explores the reasons behind the sharp increase in Malaysian house prices. The session will also touch on whether the cooling measures implemented by policymakers are justified or not.

‘Expressions from Nature’ with Yusof Ghani

The exhibition entitled ‘Ombak: Nafas Kehidupan’ by Yusof Ghani currently held at the Museum and Art Gallery, Sasana Kijang is the latest and comprehensive exhibition of Yusof Ghani’s work. For anyone who is interested in the exhibition but has yet to visit, you are welcome to the gallery before the exhibition ends on 31 March 2015.

In conjunction with this exhibition, the guru himself Yusof Ghani will be holding an art workshop called ‘Expressions from Nature’. Please bring along your camera and capture the surrounding landscape of Sasana Kijang that inspires you. The artist will be showing the techniques of how to translate the images from the photo onto the canvas using soft pastel and acrylic paint.

Soap Making for Children

Date: 11 December 2014
Time: 10 am – 11.30 am
Venue: Ground Floor, Children’s Breakout Area

This workshop is about making soap using the method of melting and pouring a ready-made soap base because it specifically caters for children as young as 4 years old. The material used for the soap making is of natural plant oils therefore it promotes care for our Mother Earth, whilst the children get to experiment with colour mixing and design their own soap with different moulds.

‘Art Attack’ with children

Date: 13 December 2014
Time: 10 am – 11.30 am
Venue: Ground Floor, Children’s Breakout Area

This art workshop enables children to explore and discover their talent by creating art using recyclable materials (paper rolls, mineral water bottles, paper cups and plates, old newspaper) to form shapes based on children’s imagination or what they desire, such as a butterfly, guitar, car, paper doll and many more!

Treasure Hunt @ MAG Terms & conditions:

  1. The treasure hunt is open to all BNM staff*, family members*, and members of the public.
  2. There will be two categories:
    • Catergory A (Family)
      Each group must consist of three participants: two children (5–12 years old) and one adult (18 years and above)
    • Catergory B (Adult)
      Each group must consist of two adults (18 years and above)
  3. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis by calling Museum and Art Gallery at 03-9179 2784 (from 10am to 6pm).
  4. Only the groups which meet the requirement will receive a confirmation email (up to a maximum of 15 groups for each category will be confirmed).
  5. The judges’ decision is final and no appeal will be entertained.

Tweaked Marshmallow Soap

Soap making is a fun and easy craft for the children. They not only get to knead the soap base into their desirable shapes, choose their favourable colours but at the same time practice on colour mixing. The soap materials are made of several natural plant oils, rich in natural glycerin and children will get to add in some natural essential oils for the smell. Handmade glycerin soaps are as fragrance as they are beautiful.

Puppet Show

It's a story-telling session for our young visitors aged from 5 to 12 years of age, to understand Bank Negara Malaysia roles and functions through an interactive puppet show. The main character is none other than a friendly security officer who will bring the children into a passage of time when the bank was first established. This is just an introductory session for the children to have a basic idea of what the central bank does and its importance.

Children will be introduced to the history and concept of the coin box. There will be a show-and-tell segment that highlights the development of coin boxes through the ages, and its varieties. The children will then participate in a role-play activity where they get to decide what to spend on and how much they want to save up using the play-money provided.
