The Fine Art of Fabrics

As the lifeblood of a nation’s creative heritage, textiles have an elevated position in Malaysia. Their status becomes less certain when put in the same room as a work of fine art. There are, however, Malaysian artists who are not afraid of bridging the gap between the ‘fine’ and the decorative.

The Fine Art of Fabrics exhibition examines the output of three artists who have furthered this cause: the late Syed Ahmad Jamal, the late Sivam Selvaratnam and Fatimah Chik. In addition to a shared passion, there is a chain of transmission from one to the other, starting with Syed Ahmad Jamal, his protegee, Sivam Selvaratnam, who then went on to teach Fatimah Chik. Works by them have been reunited in this exhibition that seeks to break down the barriers between fine and applied art.
